About PGA TOUR

The PGA TOUR is the premier professional golf tour in the United States and North America, organizing the main professional golf tournaments. Founded in 1968, the PGA TOUR has become the world’s premier membership organization for touring professional golfers, co-sanctioning more than 130 tournaments on the PGA TOUR, PGA TOUR Champions, Korn Ferry Tour, PGA TOUR Latinoamérica and PGA TOUR Canada.

💰 Prize Money Distribution

Prize money in PGA TOUR events is distributed as follows:

  • Winner: Typically receives 18% of the total purse (around $1.44 million for a standard $8 million purse).
  • Runner-up: Approximately 10.9% of the purse (around $872,000).
  • Third place: Around 6.9% of the purse (around $552,000).
  • Distribution: All players who make the cut receive a portion of the prize money, with amounts decreasing as you go down the leaderboard.
  • Minimum payout: Even the lowest finisher who makes the cut receives prize money (around 0.2% of the purse, or $16,000).

Tournament purses for regular PGA TOUR events typically range from $7-9 million, while signature events can offer purses of $20 million and higher. Major championships also feature larger purses, often exceeding $15 million.

✂️ Cut System

The cut is a standard feature in most PGA TOUR events to narrow the field for the final rounds:

  • Standard cut rule: Top 65 players and ties advance to the weekend rounds (changed from top 70 in 2019).
  • Cut timing: Made after 36 holes (the first two rounds).
  • No-cut events: Some tournaments like signature events, the TOUR Championship, and limited-field events don’t have cuts.
  • Secondary cut: In rare cases when too many players make the cut, a secondary cut (MDF – Made Cut, Did Not Finish) may occur after the third round.
  • Amateurs: Amateur players can make the cut but cannot receive prize money.

Players who miss the cut do not earn prize money or FedExCup points for that tournament, and they do not play the final two rounds.

🏆 FedExCup Points System

The FedExCup is the PGA TOUR’s season-long championship that culminates in the playoffs:

  • Regular events: 500 points to the winner, with points decreasing down the leaderboard.
  • Signature events: 700 points to the winner.
  • Major championships: 600 points to the winner.
  • The Players Championship: 600 points to the winner.
  • Playoffs: Points are increased during the FedExCup Playoffs (e.g., 2,000 points to the winner in playoff events).
  • TOUR Championship: The finale features a strokes-based scoring system where the FedExCup leader starts at -10.

The FedExCup champion earns a significant bonus (e.g., $18 million from a $75 million pool) and a 5-year PGA TOUR exemption. The top players in the final FedExCup standings retain their tour cards.

📅 Tournament Format

Most PGA TOUR events follow a standard format:

  • Duration: 4 rounds (72 holes) of stroke play, typically Thursday through Sunday.
  • Field size: Usually 132-156 players.
  • Par: Typically 70-72 for most courses.
  • Pro-Am: Many tournaments include a Pro-Am event on Wednesday where professionals play alongside amateurs.
  • Special formats: Some tournaments have unique formats:
    • Zurich Classic (team play)
    • WGC-Dell Match Play (match play format – *Note: format/event status may change year to year*)
    • The Genesis Invitational (limited field of 120 players)

The player with the lowest total score after all rounds wins the tournament. In case of a tie after 72 holes, a playoff is conducted to determine the winner, usually in a sudden-death format.
